Frequently Asked Questions

Asbestos roof against sky

We provide an identification service for the evidence of asbestos in samples of material commonly found in homes and businesses.

Although thousands of products were made with asbestos the most common products used in buildings are fibre cement, thermal insulation, vinyl tiles, bitumen fibrous backing and pipe lagging.

Anyone is welcome to bring a sample no larger than a 20 cent coin, into our office personally for analysis.

  • label_outlineHow much does it cost?

We charge $99.00 (including GST) for each sample analysed.

  • visibilityHow do I take the sample for testing?

Spraying water on the area to be tested will help contain any potential fibre release. Manually break off a small piece (1-3 cm in diameter) with pliers or cut vinyl with a pair of scissors. Place sample into 2 plastic bags (double zip lock bags are preferred). Seal any exposed areas with products such as hair spray inside or paint (or PVA dilution) on external surfaces.

Caution: Do not use power tools as this may release fibres into the air.

  • settings_ethernetHow big does the sample need to be?

The sample should be small. Around the size of a 20 cent piece is ideal.
