Asbestos-containing materials were frequently incorporated into electrical meter boxes, backing boards, and components within older air conditioning systems because of their excellent fire-resistant and insulating properties.

Meter box panels were often manufactured from asbestos cement, while air conditioning units sometimes used asbestos in insulation, duct linings, gaskets, or vibration dampening materials. When these products remain intact, the risk is generally low; however, deterioration, electrical upgrades, maintenance work, or equipment replacement can disturb the material and release fibres.

Given that these areas are commonly accessed by tradespeople, it is important that any suspected asbestos is clearly identified and managed before work begins.
