Asbestos flooring was often installed in buildings from the 1940’s through to the late 1980’s, usually found as vinyl floor tiles, sheet vinyl, backing to linoleum and the adhesive “black mastic” used to secure flooring. 

If in good condition and left undisturbed asbestos flooring generally presents a low risk because the fibres are tightly bound.

If the floor is cracked, sanded, drilled or removed without proper controls, microscopic fibres can be released into the air and inhaled posing serious long term health risks.

Asbestos flooring should be assessed, sampled and managed by suitably qualified professionals. Removal should be undertaken by licensed contractors in accordance with workplace health and safety regulations.
