Friable Asbestos
Unlike many bonded asbestos products, FRIABLE asbestos containing material is easily crumbled by hand pressure and has a much higher potential to release airborne fibres, presenting significant health risks.
Friable asbestos must be handled with the highest level of control, typically requiring enclosure, negative air filtered units, and removal by “A Class” asbestos licensed specialists.
It is commonly found in hot water pipe lagging and was also often used as a spray on fire retardant on structural beams and ceilings. Friable asbestos was used in the popular “popcorn ceilings” from the late 1950s through to the 1970s.
Immediate professional assessment is strongly advised wherever suspected friable asbestos is present.
